Why, why?
Participating in Dry July campaigns can offer a wide range of concrete benefits, both for individuals and the community as a whole.
Here's a list of benefits from doing Dry July, prepared with some help and with my comments as to whether I experienced the benefit.
1. Improved Health
One of the most evident benefits is improved physical health. Cutting out alcohol for a month can lead to better liver function, reduced risk of certain cancers, improved sleep, and enhanced immune function. At least one person observed that I "looked better" so I'll take that.
2. Enhanced Mental Clarity
Abstaining from alcohol can lead to improved cognitive function and mental clarity. Participants often report feeling more focused, alert, and mentally sharp. I'm not sure if I experienced this myself, but there were a few other things going on in my life.
3. Better Sleep Quality
Alcohol can disrupt sleep patterns and lead to poor sleep quality. By eliminating alcohol, individuals may experience more restful and refreshing sleep. I definitely got this benefit.
4. Weight Management
Alcoholic beverages can be high in calories, leading to potential weight gain. Avoiding alcohol for a month can contribute to better weight management and potentially help with weight loss. Zero sum for me, no gain but also no loss.
5. Increased Energy Levels
Alcohol consumption can lead to fatigue and decreased energy levels. During Dry July, many people notice increased energy and a greater sense of vitality. Not so much for me, but again, other factors...
6. Financial Savings
Cutting out alcohol for a month can lead to significant financial savings. Participants may be surprised by how much money they save, which can be redirected towards other meaningful activities or savings goals. Yup, got this one mostly because a mate gifted me a help of zero-alcohol drinks.
7. Empowerment and Self-Control
Successfully completing Dry July empowers participants and strengthens their sense of self-control and willpower. It can build confidence and motivate them to make healthier choices in other areas of life. That's a maybe for me, I'm a bit of a control-freak already.
8. Supporting Charitable Causes
Dry July campaigns raise funds for charitable organisations that support cancer patients and their families such as Look Good Feel better. Yes obvs got this one.
9. Building a Supportive Community
Dry July campaigns foster a sense of community among participants who share a common goal. This support network can provide encouragement, motivation, and a sense of belonging. Yes I got a lot of positive feedback.
10. Personal Growth and Reflection
Participating in Dry July encourages introspection and self-reflection. It allows individuals to examine their relationship with alcohol, identify potential issues, and take steps toward personal growth and positive change. Mmmm, maybe a little bit.
11. Positive Social Influence
By actively participating in Dry July, individuals become positive role models for friends, family, and colleagues. They can inspire others to consider their own alcohol consumption habits and potentially make healthier choices. Yes, I have had some comments that people are considering their choice based on my writings, it's rather humbling.
12. Creating Healthy Habits
A month-long alcohol-free commitment can help individuals break the habit of turning to alcohol in various situations, encouraging the development of healthier coping mechanisms. Maybe, we'll see.
So there you have it, lots of benefits. Why not enroll next year. You've got a whole year to think about it!
