I've never been a fan of New Year's resolutions. When I was a kid, we used to make them because it was kind of expected. But I never saw the point of it any more than I saw the point of going to confession.
But because it was expected of us, we did it. And of course, like everybody else, we didn't stick with our resolutions, because we didn't really believe in them or have any commitment to them.
So, I don't do that now.
What I do is set goals. I do that for my business, of course, but I also do it for myself. I've come to think of myself like I think of the business. I compete on the open market and there are always going to be greater and lesser persons than myself.
For me the issue is; can I be better than I was before? In a strange way, as I've got older, I have got better. I'm probably fitter and more active now than I was when I was a teenager. And certainly a lot more in control of my own life. When I was a corporate executive with 14-hour days and endless emails to deal with, exercise was never gonna be a priority.
So, what's the goal for this year? I have a significant birthday coming up (it's classified). My goal is to run 100 kilometers in events before this birthday arrives in late October.
The 100km has certain rules - business rules if you will - that I have set, and I will talk about those in subsequent posts. I'm going to be posting progress here, and probably making some reflections on how that kind of interweave with the goals I have set for my business.
Watch this space for progress and selfies!
