Organisations with purpose
In any advanced society there are a heap of causes that can only survive through the generosity of strangers.
In some cultures, it is expected that individuals with financial means voluntarily aid those that are needy directly. In Aotearoa, not for profit organisations are the norm and running those is a duty not for the faint-hearted.
Funding challenges
NFPs usually only have three kinds of funding.
The first is an investment base. Back in the days when national telethons were big events every year, it wasn’t uncommon for a new organisation to have their investment base boosted or even established from the proceeds of the Telethon, which were often considerable by the standards of the day.
The second form of funding is through bequests. Many people will leave some money to their favourite charity in their wills. With around 33,000 people passing on each year in this country that can add up to a substantial revenue stream.
The third method is what I’m doing now; fund-raising through branded campaigns like Dry July usually done on a voluntary basis in some way.
I try to do some form of fundraising as often as I can and each time I do it I’m always grateful for the willingness of people to open their wallets in support. I love interacting with people this way and I’m fascinated by the variation in what people will do. This time I've been frankly stunned by the level of support.
So because I’m a data geek and to honour the generous people who have already donated to my campaign, here’s some analysis of the proceeds of my campaign so far.
Total number of supporters | 32 |
Average donation amount | $97.75 |
Biggest single donation. Ka rawe! | $520.20 |
Amount raised per day on average | $148.96 |
Oh, and I'm proud to say that out of 7,914 people going dry this month, I'm at number five on the leaderboard.
