Keeping it real

Round the Bays has been my benchmark event for the last six years or so since I started running again.

The usual crowd swarmed on to the Auckland waterfront today, apparently unconcerned about pandemics turnout was if anything better than last year. My goal for this year was to trim some time off last year, with a faint hope that I might set a personal best.

My rest day was a good idea, as the legs were feeling good at the start. I had a nice slow warmup walking to the start from home, and got in about 50m of climb on the way.

In the end I did manage to shave about half a minute off last year's time, but I've still got to to take off more than 90 seconds off today to set a new PB. I've been stuck around the 58 minute mark for a few years now!

I was pleasantly surprised to see I got credited 46m of elevation on the run - I thought it was flatter than that, but the wisdom of Strava is not to be denied!

After the race I managed another couple of small climbs on the way home for a total of around 190m today - more than I expected and this keeps me right on the line for progress to the goal at a total of 2381.

Another 500 metres and I will have reached the altitude of Lukla where the real trekking begins. From there trekkers descend, but I won't be doing that of course, I will continue my virtual climb.

This week I'm planning to find some more serious mountains out of town.

Don't forget to donate to my campaign! Thanks to all of those that have.
