A guiding tradition

This is Dawa Tashi Sherpa, our head guide or Sirdar for our trek to EBC. Dawa has summited Mt Everest twice and has been working as a porter and guide since he was twelve years old. He's an amazing guy, and I learned a lot about Nepal and Sherpa traditions from him. We've kept in touch since I returned home.

Guiding is a demanding and often dangerous task that the Sherpa people have become highly skilled at. They are fiercely proud of their environment and the skills required to survive within it. Education is a big deal for them as well. When Ed Hillary asked a senior Sherpa how he could help, he was told "Our children have eyes, but they cannot see. We need a school."

Three summits of Mt Eden for me today, running total 1142 and down to 17th on the leaderboard.
